Watch out London! The city will be awash in purple this weekend! It is the University of Western Ontario’s homecoming and it all starts with the Homecoming kickoff at 7pm tonight. Festivities will be going on all weekend, so make sure you are sporting your purple jerseys everyone. Head downtown for the parade on Richmond St. on Saturday, October 1st at 9:30am, then cheer for the home team at 1pm, as the Mustangs take on the York Lions. We all know London is a great place to live, but it is an even better place to go to school. Go Western!

If your school days are far behind you and you would rather stay out of harms way this weekend, then maybe some projects around the house are more your speed. I know that everyone checked and cleaned their storm windows last weekend, so what else is there to do around the house to get ready for the wintry weather that will descend upon us before we know it? Have you checked the exterior of your house for gaps or cracks recently? While the weather is still warm enough, why not grab your caulking gun and do a walk around the outside of your house. Inspect corners, windows, doors, areas where siding meets brick, as well as any vents or other objects that protrude from the walls. If you find gaps, that means that Mother Nature will too. Make sure the caulking you have is appropriate for the job at hand, then squeeze it into any areas that require attention. Just as an aside, purple might not be such an appropriate colour here. Remember that a little caulking goes a long way towards keeping your heating and cooling bills more manageable though.

If caulking is the least of your worries and it is time to move on from your present home, then why not think about checking out some open houses this weekend? Weekends are always a great time to see what’s on the market and do a little dreaming, as far as home ownership goes. Maybe you need a bigger kitchen. Perhaps you would love a larger yard. Heck, while you are at it, what about a games room! You can have all that and more without even worrying about an open house with this beauty! This gorgeous Cape Cod style home is a listing you just won’t want to miss. As I am the listing agent, a quick call to me will get you in to see this beautiful home too!

As you dream of all the wonderful things you could do with your new home, drift into the kitchen to dream up something yummy for dinner while you are at it. What with “Homecoming” being the theme of the weekend, why not create something purple to show off your Western pride. This recipe uses another crop that is in abundance in the fall too, namely apples. Enjoy and have a great weekend! Oh, and be sure to stop by my Facebook page this weekend to see what I’ve got in store for you starting next week!

1/2 medium head of purple cabbage chopped
2 Apples chopped
1/2 a yellow onion chopped
8 oz of walnuts crushed
4 medium jalapeno peppers de-seeded and chopped
5 oz of chopped carrots
1 cup of mayonnaise
2 tablespoons low-fat milk
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons pepper
1 half lemon squeezed

In a large serving bowl, mix the purple cabbage, apples, carrots, onions, jalapeno and walnuts.  In a separate bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, milk, sugar, salt, pepper and lemon. Once it is completely combined, pour the mixture over the vegetables and stir until all the vegetables are coated. Chill for a few hours in the fridge. Serve this purple salad at your purple party later tonight!
