Dog lovers unite! This weekend Pawlooza is taking over the Plunkett Estate (9282 Elviage Dr., London)! With an estimated 25,000 two-legged folk and 6,000 strong four-legged furry ones expected to attend this one day festival, it is sure to be a fabulous day for all.

On Saturday, August 18, 2012, stuff the family, including the family dog of course, into the car and head west to just past Byron. The fun is scheduled from 10am-6pm and includes dock diving, an off-leash park, trick tips and so much more. When you hear the dogs a barkin’, pull $10 out of your wallet and hold that leash tight. That’s $10 per car load, so bring as many people as you can stuff in the vehicle. The money raised goes towards ARF Ontario and LEADS Employment Services; both worthy causes to support.

Where did this canine celebration come from, you wonder? Well, the third Saturday in August was designated National Homeless Animals Day way back in 1992 by the International Society of Animal Rights (ISAR). The ISAR recognized that there was a pet overpopulation problem and set out to do something about it. Since that time, it has become a global campaign that attracts attention from pet lovers everywhere. In fact, there will be over 50 animal rescue groups attending this year’s Pawlooza and you’ll be sure to find a free sample or two to treat your dogs to.

If Pawlooza sounds like fun, but you don’t have a dog to bring, why not consider adopting one there? You just might lose your heart to a sweet puppy that needs a home like yours to belong in. Maybe a trip to one of the pet psychics might help to make up your mind? Perhaps talking to someone about obedience training might help to make up your mind as well. Aw heck, it is just plain fun to watch the agility demonstrations alone, plus there are 175 vendors to check out while you are there. If you are worried that the kids will get bored with the dog-centred activities, make a point of stopping by the Kid Zone for face painting or bouncy castle fun for the younger set. Make a point to throw your name on a few items in the silent auction as well. There are lots of great items to bid on again this year!

So have I gone to the dogs enough this week? Want one more reason to head to Pawlooza? How about some of the snazzy outfits you will see! Sure you might look nice, but I am talking about the primping pooches at the Best Dressed contest. I can’t imagine how many crazy outfits will be on display, but it will certainly be a sight to see! If you’re going, have a woofing good time!
