Summer will officially arrive this weekend. And with it,

more rain…

Well, that’s not quite the beach weather we were hoping to usher summer in with. No matter. The summer festivals must go on! It shouldn’t hamper the Greek Festival, and you’ll just have to schedule your trip to the International Food Festival around the rain drops with umbrella in hand. There are of course other festivals and events to check out in London, Ontario this weekend as well. How about one of these local events?

Local Events in London

First up, how about a trip to the Agriplex at the Western Fair District for the Beer & BBQ Show! Yeah, now you’re talking. What is better than barbecuing with beer? Nothing! So get your tickets today (cost $12 at the door). The show is on June 21st and 22nd, from noon until 10:30 pm. What can you expect, you wonder? Well, how about samples of over 50 craft beers from around Ontario. Add to that grilling demonstrations, a tour of a mobile brewery, beer seminars from Cicerones (equivalent to Sommelier, with highly developed beer taste buds), and some good old-fashioned sports (think bocce ball, horse shoes, volleyball). There are even a few contests to enter. Plus, you might want to sample some of the fine barbecued fare of course. Cheers!

I suspect a few blokes might be interested in another show going on this weekend. No offence to any of my female readers, especially the car aficionados amongst you. You are all welcome at the REALTORS® KOOL WHEELS Charity Bike and Auto Show. The cars will be rumbling in to the London and St Thomas Association of Realtors Board’s parking lot (342 Commissioners Rd W) on Saturday June 22nd. There will be a barbeque, raffle draws, vendor booths and of course plenty of motorcycles and kool cars to check out. The show will be held from 9 am – 2 pm and all proceeds go to Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU).

Since these two other events kind of have a masculine edge to them, how about something decidedly more geared to the ladies. Ladyfest London is going on from June 21-23 at the East Village Arts Collective (EVAC) at 757 Dundas St. The Ladyfest Launch starts the weekend off at EVAC from 4-6 pm with a Womyn’s Burlesque Workshop, followed by art, music and an ironically feminist bake sale, from 7 -10 pm. That certainly sounds interesting. On Saturday a vendor fair will take over EVAC from 10 am – 4 pm, with art, jewellery, clothing, etc, plus food provided by Veg Out Restaurant. The fun moves on to The APK (347 Clarence St) in the evening with a Ladyfest Feisty Fashion Show at 7 pm, and DJ and dancing til 2 am. If you are up that late, no worries, as Ladyfest doesn’t get rolling until the open mic at Grooves (353 Clarence St) from 1-4 pm on Sunday. Festivities close out the weekend with the Surreal Women Story Slam at 9 pm. All proceeds from the weekend go to My Sister’s Place (women’s support community for women in danger of mental illness, poverty and/or homelessness). And if you are worried that there might be too much estrogen around for you, take note that men are allowed at the festivities!

Festivals for men and women alike, all weekend long in London! Where will you be?
