Another weekend is almost upon us. That is the beauty of short weeks I suppose. The weekend arrives that much sooner! Nice!

As far as this weekend is concerned, it doesn’t look like it is going to be quite as warm as our last. That might give you the opportunity to start on your backyard makeover. Or it might be the perfect time to get out and check out a few open houses in the neighbourhood. What do you think?

Fanshawe Yacht Club and Sailing School Annual Open House:

Not sure how much wind is needed, but the weather man is predicting some and I bet the folks out at the Fanshawe Yacht Club and Sailing School should be thrilled, as they have their Annual Open House this weekend from 10 am – 4 pm on May 25-26, 2013. The club is located on Fanshawe Lake at the Fanshawe Conservation Area off Clarke Rd (north of Huron St). This event is Free and should be FUN! Make sure to bring soft-soled shoes, a windbreaker and a smile. Life jackets will be provided, as well as instructors and other knowledgable individuals to answer any questions you may have. The only other thing required is that wind to blow you around the lake!

Or how about attending one of my Open Houses? That’s right, you have the choice between two Open Houses on Sunday, May 26th from 2-4 pm. And just to ease confusion, no, I am not splitting myself in two. I will be at 378 Richmeadow Rd (Open House #2) and another agent is helping me out on 44 Emery St.

OPEN HOUSE #1 – 44 Emery St

Open House #1

Your first stop is 44 Emery St, London. This quaint bungalow is walking distance to all the best that Old South has to offer. It has 2+1 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and sits on a 30′ x 189′ lot. There is a detached garage, beautifully landscaped gardens, plus a hot tub on your very own back deck! This great home also features a gas fireplace, hardwood floors, central air and a finished basement. All it needs now is a new owner! Is that you?

OPEN HOUSE #2 – 378 Richmeadow Rd

Open House #2

Now this 8 year-old house is a dream for any family needing to relocate. The 3-bedroom home, situated in desirable Oakridge, is walking distance to some fine local schools. The 61.73′ x 110.17′ lot leaves plenty of space to relax, run around in or just have fun in the sun. There is a mix of hardwood, carpet and ceramics throughout this beautiful home that features a stunning two-sided gas fireplace. And yes, it does have that coveted ensuite bath off your sizable master bedroom. All you need to do is stop by to take a look, and we can take care of the paperwork from there. See you Sunday!

Have you battened down the hatches Londoners? We have had a wet week thus far and it isn’t done raining on us yet. In fact, there is a freezing rain warning in effect right now and tonight we will see even more rain and high winds. The rain is supposed to continue into tomorrow and Saturday too. That sounds like it is time for me to throw out some indoor ideas for what to do this weekend. Anyone into art?

Art In Your Neighbourhood

You are in for a treat this weekend art fans! This weekend is the London Artists’ Studio Tour 2013. The annual event is even more special this year, as it is celebrating its 20th anniversary of bringing London-based artists to the public. These artists are a fun and varied mix of woodworkers, sculptors, potters, plus many others who work in acrylics, metal, pencils, glass, oils, silks, and other textiles. There are 27 artists displaying their studios and hand-crafted wares this year from April 12 – 14th, 2013. Opening night is Friday from 7 – 9:30 pm. The Studio Tour continues on Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm and Sunday from noon – 5 pm. The best part is that whether you buy a piece of artwork to take home with you or not, participating in the tour is FREE! Of course the hard-working local artists would be thrilled if you helped support local artwork by buying a piece of something. Ad there will be LOTS to choose from.

Art by Johnnene Maddison

First come first serve on refreshments and purchasing power Friday night! Check out everyone from Turning Bull Pottery in the East to Susan Skaith’s jewellery in the north. Katie Walker‘s textile pieces can be found in the west end and Beth Stewart will be displaying her pencil skills in south London. That is only a fraction of the artists though, so check a map and set yourself an itinerary. It’s a perfect weekend to discover the wealth of talent we have right here in London.

Imagine a nice oil painting by Kevin Bice hanging over the mantle…

Maybe you could even pick up the perfect art piece to hang in your new home! Let me tempt you with this gorgeous new house at 534 Willowdale Ave. This 3 bedroom, 2 bath home is brand new and just waiting for you to move in. There is hardwood and ceramic throughout this beautiful luxury home on a high-end street. The luxury doesn’t stop there though. Cook up a feast in your gourmet kitchen featuring granite countertops. Step outside of your 1,800 sq ft home and you’ll find nature on your doorstep, with streams, walking trails and a ravine right across the road from your 62.50 frontage. Have I tempted you to stop by yet?

Certainly potential for some art in this spacious master bath

Don’t just think about it, do it! I will be there for an Open House on Sunday from 2-4 pm. Not that I really even need to be there, as this house sells itself! It has a double, attached garage, central air (for the coming summer months), a huge great room, main floor laundry and tonnes of potential in the massive unfinished basement. What more do you need in a new home? It certainly doesn’t hurt that it is close to shopping, groceries, UWO, plus other great schools as well. So what are you waiting for? Right, you want to pick up that special glass piece from Jayne Cornelis for your master bath. Bring it with you Sunday afternoon! See you then.

I often play host to many an Open House that is held around the city. My job is to meet and greet folks at the door, as they step into a house for sale and try to make them feel at home. I answer any questions people have and help them out when they are ready to sign on the dotted line. Really, that is the same role as any proprietor at an Open House though, whether it be a real estate transaction or a business that is opening their doors to the public for their exploration. Well, this weekend in London, Ontario you are in luck, as there are a few Open Houses to explore around the city. Check it out!

Budding Artists Open House and Christmas Sale

First up, why not think about stopping by the new home of Budding Artists for a little holiday cheer? They are located behind Parkwood Hospital (old Sitting Tree location) at 944 Western Counties Rd in the Bruce Pavilion Building. The Open House will be open to the public from 10 am – 2 pm and craft activities will be available for the kids, as well as hot drinks and snacks for everyone. While your children get their faces painted, you can get a head-start on Christmas shopping too, as there will be eco-friendly art kits available, as well as Budding Artists keepsake products. Why not think about keeping your Christmas shopping dollars local this year, by spending them at a local Canadian company that promotes children’s creativity and imagination through the Arts?

Richmond Row Christmas Walk & Open House

If you are looking for items for everyone on your Christmas list, you could also head to downtown London to explore the 11th Annual Richmond Row Christmas Walk. This year the local event is being held on November 22nd  and 23rd from 5-9 pm. Compliments of ImPark, there will be plenty of free parking, but that is just the beginning. Local vendors have dug deep and you are eligible for 34 fabulous prizes, including a Grand Prize of 4 tickets to see Miracle on 34th St at the Grand Theatre, plus dinner for 4 at Wink’s Eatery and a night’s stay at the Station Park Hotel. Even if you don’t win one of the many prizes available, there will be free horse and carriage rides on Thursday, plus photo opportunities to snap a picture of you, Santa and a real, live reindeer on Friday. Grab snacks at local businesses and enjoy carolers as they stroll down Richmond Row. Don’t forget to vote on the best window display while you are there too!

Open House at 534 Willowdale Ave

Real Estate Open House

You even have the opportunity to meet me, Jim, on Sunday, November 25th from 2-4 pm, as I play host at another Open House at 534 Willowdale Rd. This Open House is more of the traditional real estate listing kind though. When you arrive, you will be able to explore this 3 bedroom, 2 bath home, situated on a 62′ wide lot. That’s a lot of space for this brand new house on a high-end street. You’ll find a gourmet kitchen with granite countertops, a 36″ gas fireplace and top quality finishes throughout. Plus, there are nature trails to wander right across the road. Don’t take my word for it though. You have to see this home to appreciate all it has to offer. See you Sunday!

Have a great weekend Londoners!

Hello London!

What’s up in your world this coming weekend? Does anyone have any exciting plans? The temperatures won’t be through the roof by any stretch, but it doesn’t look like rain so far. How many of you will be out in the garden? I am sure you can find a few things to prune, or a weed or two to eradicate. Maybe you can even get a few plants in the ground too! I don’t think you can quite plant the whole vegetable garden just yet, but there are a few things you can get into the ground already, like;

  • beets
  • carrots
  • leeks
  • lettuce & other salad greens
  • peas
  • radishes
  • spinach
  • swiss chard

All of these veggies love cooler weather and can handle the occasional frost that Mother Nature still has in store for us. Just be forewarned though, that if a hard frost (or gasp… snow!) is called for, you can always cover up your tender plants with anything from burlap, newspaper, a cardboard box or a cloche of some sort or another.

Now if you are itching to harvest something, then you are not completely out of luck. If you have asparagus in your garden give it a check, as some of the Ontario asparagus is starting to come ready. Generally you can begin harvesting asparagus three years after it is planted, so if you have been waiting patiently, get out there now! Some of your perennial herbs might be big enough to flavour your meals with, like chives, oregano or perhaps even the thyme. Also keep an eye on the rhubarb patch, as it will be ready sooner than you think. And for those of you that are out there weeding dandelions from your yard, why not keep a handful to bring into the kitchen. It is chock full of vitamins A, B complex, C and D, plus contains iron, potassium and zinc. You can add the leaves into your salad, turn the flowers into wine or make a tea out of the leaves or roots. Not quite certain that you are ready to take that step? Why not try this recipe from Southern Food.

Dandelion Greens

Taraxacum officinale (Dandelion) - weed

  • 1 pound dandelion greens
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 whole small dried hot chile pepper, seeds removed, crushed
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil
  • salt and pepper
  • Parmesan cheese

Discard dandelion green roots; wash greens well in salted water. Cut leaves into 2-inch pieces. Cook greens uncovered in small amount of salted water until tender, about 10 minutes. Sauté onion, garlic, and chile pepper in oil. Drain greens; add to onion garlic mixture. Taste dandelion greens and season with salt and pepper. Serve dandelion greens with grated Parmesan cheese.

Serve that up with a nice big fat steak and Bob’s your uncle.

Open House this weekend at 11324 Ivan Dr!

Of course, if you find you are getting blisters on your hands from all that gardening by the end of the weekend, you could always venture out to take a tour around 11324 Ivan Dr. I will be holding an Open House there on Sunday from 1-4pm and would love to show you around the place. It has 4 bedrooms, 2 baths and is surrounded by a 5 acre hobby farm, with a barn and paddocked area that can accommodate up to 4 horses. Other points of note are its geothermal heating, open concept main floor with hardwoods, propane fireplace with stone, granite countertops and an updated well pump. You have to see this property to truly appreciate all it has to offer, and all only 10 minutes from London!  So slate in a short drive and just wait to fall in love with this gorgeous home in Ilderton.

Have a great weekend! See you Sunday!
